Pope Leo XIV addressed a delegation from the Special Olympics this morning at the Vatican, recalling his own great fondness for sports. He urged them to embody holy lives by drawing inspiration from Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati, who exemplified a love for Jesus and translated the values of sport into a life of goodness.
During the meeting, the Pope expressed his joy in welcoming the Italian athletes who participated in the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin. He reflected on the essence of sports, particularly its ability to instill noble and authentic values in individuals. “As you know,” Pope Leo stated, “I too am very fond of sport, and I am convinced of its great educational value, because it teaches people noble and authentic values.”
The Pope recognized that engaging in sports entails serious commitment and hard work. He emphasized the importance of sharing the rewards of perseverance through loyalty, trust, openness, team spirit, and courage. He further remarked, “Our world is greatly in need of people who, like you, remind everyone of the true values of life; of men and women who, through their example, show that the path of sharing and love is the only path that truly leads to happiness and peace.”
Pope Leo XIV highlighted that sport serves as a “universal language,” capable of transcending various cultural, social, religious, and physical barriers, effectively uniting people. He extended his gratitude to the athletes, coaches, officials, assistants, and collaborators for their presence, the joy they exude, and the uplifting message they promote. He encouraged them to continue their work with enthusiasm and concluded by imparting his Apostolic Blessing while urging them to pursue holy lives.
