Pope Leo XIV issued a video message for the 100th World Mission Sunday, commemorated on October 18, 2026. In his address, he expressed deep gratitude to the faithful for their prayers and support, recognizing their essential role in nurturing his own vocation and sustaining missionary efforts around the world, particularly in Peru.
In the video message, Pope Leo reflected on this year's theme, “One in Christ, United in Mission.” He began by thanking God for the “abundant fruits” the Church has experienced since World Mission Sunday was established by Pope Pius XI one hundred years ago. The Pope noted his predecessor's initiatives aimed at increasing awareness of the missionary task within every diocese and parish, while also encouraging prayer for evangelization, fostering missionary vocations, and supporting the work of the Pontifical Mission Societies.
Pope Leo shared how these efforts have profoundly shaped his own faith journey. “Looking back on my youth, I can see how the prayers offered to the Lord of the harvest mysteriously helped prepare my heart to hear Jesus’ call to follow him as an Augustinian missionary,” he stated. He emphasized that the prayers and contributions of the faithful not only supported his work in Peru but also that of countless missionaries across the globe. “For this reason, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported World Mission Sunday over the years,” he added.
Pope Leo XIV then elaborated on the significance of this year's theme, highlighting the critical need to nurture unity within the Church as all members follow Christ together, demonstrating a shared commitment to disseminating the Gospel message of salvation. He explained that through Baptism, each individual becomes part of the Body of Christ, possessing “a unique role in contributing to Jesus’ saving work.” He further urged, “Our Lord calls us to cooperate as one family, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to bring everyone everywhere into a communion of faith in Christ.”
In reaffirmation of themes touched upon in his January 25, 2026, message for the centenary celebration, Pope Leo renewed his appeal for all to contribute to the mission of evangelization according to their vocational gifts. “Let us all commit to contributing to the great mission of evangelization — which is always a work of love,” he insisted. He reiterated that prayers and tangible support are vital in bringing “the Gospel of God’s love to everyone, especially the poorest and those most in need.”
Concluding his video message, Pope Leo XIV thanked the faithful for their anticipated support in continuing the legacy of World Mission Sunday and for their contributions to the Church's mission of evangelization worldwide.
