Pope Leo XIV received the President of Montenegro, Mr. Jakov Milatović, on Saturday morning in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace. This meeting, characterized by cordiality, provided a platform to discuss various matters of mutual interest between the Holy See and the Balkan nation.
Following the audience with Pope Leo XIV, President Milatović also held discussions with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, who serves as the Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations.
During the talks at the Secretariat of State, the leaders highlighted the positive relations that exist between the Holy See and Montenegro. The conversation encompassed a range of international and regional issues, particularly focusing on Montenegro's integration into the European Union alongside other Western Balkan countries. They also addressed significant ongoing conflicts, notably the situation in Ukraine.
This audience marked a continuation of diplomatic relations, as President Milatović had been received in audience by the late Pope Francis on 7 March 2024. Such meetings illustrate the ongoing dialogue between the Vatican and Montenegro on both regional and international fronts.
